Actos – Conflicting Views

Takeda, the company behind the drugs actos is still confident for positive results since different studies in different countries are conflicting.

After completing a three year study on the drugs, European countries namely France and Germany pulled the drug out of the market because of claimed proof of the drugs link to bladder cancer. With this, the said countries also advised doctors to stop prescribing the drug to patients who have type II diabetes.

Although patient who are currently taking the drugs are advised to continue the medication until they have seen their doctors and given alternative because sudden stop of the medication can cause serious health problems.

Even though this is the case in some European countries, actos drugs are still out in the United States market and in other countries. According to Takeda, they are still confident of the good benefits that the drug can give because the FDA in U.S have not release any clear evidence yet regarding the connection of the drug to the said disease. Takeda said that they have not reviewed the study of the European countries and is patiently waiting for the final release of the result in the FDA of the U.S.

Takeda added that the French study lacks data from the FDA which is conducting a long term study on the drug. France just studied the drug in a three year basis while the FDA is conducting a 10 year trial on the drug so Takeda is more interested in FDA’s results than of the French result.

Although the company cannot do anything about the pulling out of their manufactured medicine in the French market, they are still committed to Actos as their product. These conflicts of different studies are now giving the people confusion on what to do and how to deal with the drug.

The Existing Side Effects

Actos also had undergone several studies. So before releasing the drug into the market, the company has several warnings on the side effects of the drug. The first side effect that they identified is that the drug can cause fluid retention. This effect can in some ways create heart failure.

It can also cause weight gain for some people and lastly it can cause increased possibility of bone fractures. So as we can see, the company had also been honest in the bad sides of the drug. The later discovered side effect maybe was not showed in the tests that they have made to the drug. People should be very careful in all the things they are using especially when their health is at stake.

On the other hand, pharmaceutical companies should also be very careful in the drugs that they are creating and releasing to the market. They should be aware of the bad sides that it can give the people. They should also inform the people of the things they have to know about the medicine. Another thing about the drug is that, it cost way more expensive than other drugs that are present in the market. That is why it cannot be easily patronized by people who do not have a good economic status.

I think pharmaceutical companies should lessen the price of the medicines because it is the right of every people to have an access for good medicines and for effective medicines. It is sad to say but in reality today, people who have a higher economic status can afford to have a healthy living because they have the access of all the expensive technology that can make you health.

Our health is a gift to us, so like other gifts given to us, we must learn how to treasure it. And people should learn to respect and give it importance too.

Actos Indication, Usage and Administration

Actos is said to be a partner of exercise and proper diet to improve glucose level control in patients with the type II diabetes.

Actos can be indicated as mono-therapy but can also be indicated in combination with other medications such as insulin or metformin if the diet, exercise and the mono-therapy is not working. To manage type II diabetes it is also essential to have nutritional counseling, to undergo proper exercise and to reduce weight. This is not only essential to manage type II diabetes but also to help the efficiency of the drug to work in your body.

Of course, the lesser the complication in the body such as obesity, it is easier for the drug to work in the body. Actos, should be taken once a day only even without regard to the meals of the day. The management of the type II diabetes should be done with regular tests, check-ups and consultation with the physician. Diabetes treatment needs partnership from the doctor and the patient to be successful. Actos use is prescribed in a long period of time because it needs to control the glucose level of the diabetic person. Actos will not take effect immediately after taking it in a short period of time.

The dosage of the medicine will depend on the situation of the patient. Higher dosage is given to severe cases while lower dosage is given to people who have mild cases. That is why it needs partnership from the patient and the doctor because the patient alone is not allowed to take the medicine, adjust the dosage of the medicine and combine the medicine with others without the advice of the doctor for it will cause a great damage if the patients do that.

On the other hand, before deciding on these things, the doctor needs to know the conditions of the patient so that he can give the appropriate treatment to the patient.

A Brief Summary of Actos

In the fight against Type 2 Diabetes, the goal to management is often eating a healthy diet and exercise to maintain weight and optimal heath. Many early cases have been reversed by this method. However, sometime the regimen is not enough and doctors turn to alternative medications, such as Actos, to prevent the individual from becoming dependent on insulin for long term control.

What is Actos?

Actos is taking once a day to help the body conserve and store blood glucose at acceptable levels. It works in conjunction with diet and exercise, and forces the cells to accept more glucose from the blood stream to prevent an excessively high level circulating throughout the body. It makes the body more readily acceptable to the effects of insulin, and this is how the medication keeps blood glucose in control.

Who Can Take It?

Actos can be a choice for anyone who is actively trying to control their diabetes with healthy eating and exercise, not for someone who is non-compliant with efforts to do so. People who are responsible and maintain blood sugar levels at 130 before any meal are also good candidates for the medication. Because it is taken once a day, the medication can fit easily into a busy lifestyle. It is not suitable, however, for anyone whose diabetes is uncontrolled despite healthy lifestyle, or requires more aggressive methods of treatment.

What are the Side Effects?

Side effects include headache and an increase chance of upper respiratory infections, as well as fluid retention and some weight gain. General malaise like symptoms are not uncommon but shouldn’t linger for any extensive period of time. On rare occasions, it has been known to exacerbate CHF, and can cause extremely low or high blood sugar, which carry more significant risks of serious health complications.

Actos has been found to be safe to take with other diabetic medications as long as the prescribing physician feels it is appropriate to do so. Maintaining proper diet and exercise when diagnosed with diabetes is advised by doctors regardless of the medications taken to control it.

Actos competes with Avandia

Actos and Avandia are both diabetes drugs that were created by two different companies. Both of them had been released in the market long before. And both of them are also question after some time because people who have been using the drugs are suffering from heart failures.

Because of this, the Food and Drug association decided to put both of the drugs in a test. Because of this, the two companies behind the two drugs are making ways on how to still market the drugs despite of the controversies that are being thrown to them.

One way that the company behind the drug actos thought of is to make advertisements that claim that the drug does not create side effects unlike the Avandia. Other advertisements focus on the powerful ability of the drug to cure diabetes. Well, unfortunately the lack of the two drugs was not high. Avandia is not really much used by people today because it was pulled out of the market. And for the actos drug, well, it still is facing new controversies regarding its side effects. In other countries, actos was already suspended and banned to use.

Although in the United States, actos is still in the process of its ten year trial, of course people are now afraid to use the drug because of the said effects that it can cause. This is because aside from the heart failure that it is facing, now it is also linked to bladder cancer. At this point, people cannot really help themselves to compare the two drugs from another. Others say that actos is far safer than the drug Avandia because in the case of heart failure, more Avandia takers died in connection to it. In fact, there are doctors who like actos better than Avandia. But actos still have to wait for it to have a cleared name. The issue concerning its connection to bladder cancer is another thing to go through.

Several questions and critiques about the ascots drug have risen in different places. In, France, actos is also put in hot seat. The drug Pioglitazone or known in the name actos was discovered to be causing bladder cancer to the said users of the drug. This is the reason why The Director General of the Agency of Medicines found in France declared it to be suspended in the pharmaceutical industry.

Selling and using the drug is prohibited for the continuous research on the bad side effects that was seen. What is even interesting is that, most of the people who they examined to be in the risk of having bladder cancer because of the drugs is mostly male.

Studies are still made about this because no existing explanation is there why the people mostly affected are males. Yes, actos is an effective drug in curing diabetes, but because of the side effect that it brings to its users, it was prohibited. Who would want to risk their lives in getting another kind of disease because of a drug anyways? Drugs’ role should be to cure diseases and not to add another problem to the people’s lives. Until now, this drug is still question and is still in the hot seat. And today, the drug was suspended not only in France but in other countries that are using the drug too.

Researchers even advised doctors to stop prescribing the medicine for diabetic individuals. The mere use of the drug is a great risk. But what is more risky is to take in high doses of the drugs in a long period of time. It is said the taking actos can give you 22% increased chance in having bladder cancer. But higher doses can give you 75% increased chance of acquiring the side effects.
